WHAT WE DO
Bauxite
Standard & General provides a critical link in the global supply of bauxite and alumina.
Standard & General markets bauxite and alumina to industrial consumers all over the world. Our strength comes from our direct relationships with the world's major bauxite producers.
Bauxite ore is the world's primary raw material used in alumina production, which is the feedstock for aluminum smelting. We market bauxite and alumina to industrial consumers in the aluminum industry, and we aim to meet the world's growing demand for aluminum products.
Aluminum production starts with bauxite, which is mostly found in a belt around the equator. Bauxite typically contains 15-25 percent aluminum, and there are around 29 billion tonnes of known reserves. These reserves are sufficient to meet the global demand for aluminum for many centuries at current extraction rates.
Aluminum is 100% recyclable, and increased aluminum recycling, which is efficient, will considerably extend the world's bauxite reserves. Aluminum is one of the world's most versatile and sustainable metals and is used in the automotive, construction, electrical, packaging, marine, aerospace, and defense industries.
Bauxite is usually found near the surface, where it can be economically strip-mined. When the land is cleared before mining, the topsoil is stored to be replaced during restoration. Bauxite is broken up during the strip-mining process and taken out of the mine to an alumina refinery. Once mining is complete, the topsoil is replaced, and the area undergoes an environmental restoration process.
Our customers value Standard & General's reliability and sustainability of supply. Standard & General leverages its global reach and extensive bauxite and alumina supply network to continuously deliver to our industrial customers worldwide.
